| Roman Numeral: | Signed & Dated | This table was made in the basement workshop of the apartment we rented as our first home. That was on 48th street just west of Washington Park in Milwaukee.
I had only hand tools to fashion this table from 12/4 (3 inch thick) walnut acquired from Charlie Knight in Green Lake County, WI. I used thick wood so it could be easily re-used at a future time. The legs were attached with mortise and tenon joinery. The top was joined with splines and made flat with hand planes and scrapers. It was made round by drilling a series of holes around the future diameter and removing the remainder with a chisel. In 2008 my loving wife asked if the old table could be used to fashion her new design. The old tabletop was split to form two new surfaces. New legs were added and we have an exciting new piece of furniture. Of course, finished with a waterborne acrylic. |
